Spatiotemporal Surgical Video Reasoning for Procedure-Aware Clinical Assistance and Planning
Main Article Content
Abstract
The rapid proliferation of minimally invasive surgery and robotic-assisted procedures has generated vast repositories of surgical video data. Analyzing this visual data presents a critical opportunity to develop intelligent clinical assistance systems capable of procedure-aware reasoning. This paper investigates the comprehensive domain of spatiotemporal surgical video reasoning, exploring how computational models can interpret complex visual information across both spatial dimensions and temporal sequences to provide actionable insights during operations. We examine the fundamental challenges inherent in surgical environments, including variable lighting, camera motion, instrument occlusion, and the intricate interactions between surgical tools and soft tissues. By integrating spatial localization of anatomical structures and surgical instruments with temporal modeling of surgical phases and discrete actions, advanced analytical frameworks can achieve a profound understanding of operative workflows. The methodologies discussed encompass hierarchical temporal architectures, contextual awareness mechanisms, and procedure-specific alignment strategies that collectively facilitate real-time phase recognition, anomaly detection, and predictive clinical planning. Furthermore, this study details the experimental protocols necessary for validating these systems, analyzing quantitative metrics and qualitative outcomes to demonstrate their efficacy in mitigating cognitive load for surgical teams. Ultimately, robust spatiotemporal reasoning paradigms stand to revolutionize intraoperative assistance, streamline surgical training, and pave the critical pathway toward autonomous surgical systems.
